The Poetry of Podcasting: converting Oral History to engaging narrative podcasts.

Keynote by Siobhán McHugh, for Oral History Network of Ireland.

Talk is HERE.

In this talk Siobhán discusses how to turn interviews into an audio story and how to use music and ambient sound to build engaging narrative. It uses illustrative audio clips from three projects: the podcast Heart of Artness, about cross-cultural relationships behind the production of contemporary Australian Aboriginal art; the radio documentary series Marrying Out, about sectarianism and bigotry in Australia; and the radio documentary series Minefields and Miniskirts, about Australian women’s role in the Vietnam war. From the Prologue to her book The Power of Podcasting, Siobhán does a live demo of converting entertainer Ingrid Hart’s ‘raw’ interview to story, using music and ambient sound to add mood and pace. (Demo starts at 37.01).
